NWSA Water Branch
Al-Ghaidhah water branch is responsible for water services in Al-Ghaidhah city, Al-Maharah governorate. It was established in 1995 as a branch of the National Water and Sanitation Authority to manage and operate the urban water supply network that serves Al-Ghaidhah city and surrounding areas. The branch abstracts its water supply from groundwater resources through a network of wells located in two wellfields. It operates a 320 km pipeline network that distributes water to over 6,000 connections serving about 123,160 people, equivalent to 68% of the district's population. Over the past years, Al-Ghaidhah water branch has faced many challenges that affected its operations and services. Most notably, tropical cyclones Luban in 2018 and Tej in 2023 caused significant damage to the branch's wellfields and pipeline networks which interrupted water services for long periods. In addition, the ongoing conflict situation has brought indirect impacts such as fuel shortages, power cuts, rising operation costs, and reduced revenues. As a result, the branch struggles to maintain its services and continue infrastructure maintenance using limited local resources and support from humanitarian organizations.
Annex 9 Technical Assessment Report comprise a detailed technical assessment for the Al Ghaidhah Water Branch, part of a broader damage assessment study for Yemen's urban water supply and sanitation sector. The report provide a comprehensive evaluation of the branch's organizational structure, financial capacity, customer management and IT infrastructure. It also includes an analysis of water production and distribution systems, highlighting the impact of recent cyclones and ongoing conflict on operational effectiveness. Recommendations for technical assistance and investment plans are outlined, emphasizing the need for urgent rehabilitation measures, capacity building, and infrastructure improvements to ensure sustainable water supply and sanitation services in Al Ghaidhah.
