Al-Mukalla

Local Corporation for Water & Sanitation services

Al-Mukalla is the capital of Hadramout Governorate, located in eastern Yemen on the Arabian Sea. With a population of approximately 449,193 as of 2022, it is a significant port city and the sixth-largest city in Yemen. The climate is coastal, with hot summers and mild winters, and the region suffers from drought due to low and infrequent rainfall. Al-Mukalla Local Corporation for Water and Sanitation (LC), established in 2006, serves about 95% of the city's population through seven supply zones. The water distribution system in Al-Mukalla comprises 49 operational wells with a combined nominal water production capacity of 62,239 cubic meters per day. The residents receive water for approximately seven hours per day. About 63.9% of Al-Mukalla's residents are connected to the public sewer network. Al-Mukalla LC faces significant challenges, including a shortage of equipment, emergency vehicles, and spare parts for operation and maintenance. The water and sanitation systems require urgent rehabilitation, with an estimated investment of USD 64,414,572 over the next five years. This includes measures for building and reservoir rehabilitation, well construction, water network expansion, and implementation of solar energy systems.
