Local Corporation for Water & Sanitation services

Lahij Local Corporation for Water and Sanitation (LC) is responsible for providing water and sanitation services to the cities of Al-Hawtah and Tuban in Lahj Governorate, Yemen. As of 2022, the population served by the LC was 208,669, with about 65% of the population receiving water supply through a distribution network. The average per capita water consumption is adequate, ranging from 80 to 85 liters per person per day, sourced entirely from groundwater of good quality. However, only 18% of the population has access to sanitation services, and there is only one operational wastewater treatment plant, with plans to construct another in the Fashelah area. The LC faces challenges such as outdated organizational structures, inadequate financial and technical capacity, and limited customer service infrastructure. To address these, recommended measures include institutional restructuring, capacity building, enhancing customer management systems, and significant investment in water and sanitation infrastructure, totaling approximately $11,935,500 in estimated costs.
